The Birren Center for Autobiographical Studies was created more than 20 years ago by Dr. James E. Birren, the founder. Since then, we have developed new courses and trained nearly 700 Guided Autobiography instructors in 32 countries. Dr. Birren died in 2016 at the age of 97. He did not live to see his dream become a reality; in 2023 we became a California based 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization. We are a grassroots movement with talented and dedicated members leading the way to overcome diversity, build interpersonal connections, and make the world whole one story at a time.
The Birren Center for Autobiographical Studies enriches lives through writing, sharing, and preserving life stories and experiences. Guided Autobiography (GAB) strives to bring students and instructors together in a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment. The Birren Center welcomes people from all backgrounds. We embrace the full spectrum of humanity, building community by sharing experiences.
